What is “hybrid mode” supply management? A recent SupplyChainBrain.com article that covered a study by AMR Research describes it as a mixed manufacturing mode that lies somewhere between a make-to-stock (MTS) mode and a make-to-order (MTO) or engineer-to-order (ETO) mode (1). To appreciate the significance of the hybrid mode, it is important to understand that the role of supply management and customer fulfillment management varies from one mode to another. This variance is explained below:
Make-to-Stock (MTS): The supply management process stretches from the acquisition of raw materials to deployment of finished goods inventories into the channel, while the customer fulfillment process involves taking an order and delivering it to the customer.
Make-to-Order (MTO) or Assemble-to-Order (ATO): The supply management process covers staging the raw materials or semi-finished sub-assemblies throughout the supply network, while the customer fulfillment includes taking an order, doing final assembly, and delivering the product to the customer.
Engineer-to-Order (ETO): The customer fulfillment process includes all the steps in the MTO and ATO strategy, as well as product development, engineering or configuration, and some sourcing steps. |

Nachhaltiges, grenzübergreifendes Zulieferkettenmanagement (Supply Chain Management – SCM) ist heute eine der größten Herausforderungen für multinationale Unternehmen und ihre Subunternehmer. Kunden und Investoren fordern heute zunehmend, dass Unternehmen die ökonomische, ökologische und soziale Performance ihrer Zulieferer in den Blick nehmen und Verantwortung für den gesamten Lebenszyklus eines Produktes übernehmen. Dabei gibt es keine goldene Regel, wie nachhaltiges SCM im Unternehmen konkret ausgestaltet werden kann oder wie weit hinein in die Zulieferkette die Maßnahmen reichen sollen. The Sustainable Supply Chain Project
The growing importance of China and India, along with rapidly rising fuel prices, have caused some firms to begin to reexamine their manufacturing processes and the configurations of their supply chains. In relation, the definition of the concept of sustainability is evolving. For many firms and organizations, sustainability refers primarily to environmental stewardship. For other groups, sustainability seems to primarily mean actions related to social responsibility. Many of the managers who have worked on the concept of sustainability in the past have avoided much focus on the financial portion of sustainability and concentrated on the environment and social responsibility. For this project, we plan to focus on how supply chains, and the firms that make up those supply chains, can be long lasting. |

Well, it’s the dawn of the new millennium and the age of the Supply Chain. We’ve successfully survived the Y2K non-crisis and, in the process, gotten a new ERP System to back bone the company’s information management infrastructure. Now we are entering the new age of Supply Chain Management trying to tie all the nodes of the supply chain together so that materials flow seamlessly along a path beginning with a customer’s order and pulling through from the raw material supplier all the way through the process. Supply Chain Sustainability
The Global Compact encourages signatories to engage with their suppliers around the Ten Principles, and thereby to develop more sustainable supply chain practices. However, many companies lack the knowledge or capacity to effectively integrate the principles into their existing supply chain programmes and operations. In particular, a challenge remains to ensure that sustainability considerations are embedded within all sourcing processes.
To assist companies in improving their processes, the Global Compact and partners are currently developing guidance on how to take a more proactive approach to integrate the Ten Principles into supply chain management practices. Because supply chain sustainability is a cross-cutting issue, this work is closely coordinated with the strategy and work done in the four Global Compact issues areas (human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption).
The Global Compact Office has entered into a strategic partnership with BSR (Business for Social Responsibility), a global business membership network and consultancy focused on sustainability, to develop an implementation guide and a learning and assessment tool for Global Compact signatories. This guidance will be launched at the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2010, on 24-25 June in New York. |
